Item Details: Developing Emotionally Intelligent Principals

Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory identified intrapersonal intelligence, the ability to know oneself, as one of eight distinct intelligences (Gardner, 1983, 2004). The proliferation of personal and professional development models since then attests to the ongoing interest among both researchers and practitioners in understanding the relationship between intrapersonal intelligence and leadership. Two influential business books by Stephen Covey (1989, 1990) dramatically increased awareness of intrapersonal growth and its relationship to leader behavior. Covey's central tenet, that a leader's personal growth must precede and continuously reinforce interpersonal leader behaviors.
